Wreath-Making Workshop – Bonnie Kulke, one of our resident herbal experts, is planning to offer a wreath workshop in August, at her home in Marshall. All this is contingent on whether her crop of artemesia returns (last year’s flood ruined much of it.) If you’re interested in learning how to make wreaths for the holidays, or anytime, this is for you—beginner or experienced crafters are welcome. Colleen Bell and Natascha Buter from Cook With Herbs LLC will give a talk titled “Cooking with Herbs---A Culinary Presentation”. The talk will focus on how to use some less commonly known herbs such as Anise Hyssop, Chervil, Epazote, Hyacinth Bean, Lemongrass, Mitsuba, Red Shizo, and Chocolate Mint in your cooking. The talk will feature a cooking presentation using these herbs with lots of samples to share. |

Native American Herbs Study Group – Many of you have indicated that the small study groups are your thing, so this summer we will have another one for you to join. This is open to beginners and experienced herb people.
After Olbrich’s Herb Garden got an overhaul with the drainage system, it set in motion an opportunity to have one of the area’s first public Rain Gardens—herbal, no less. Samantha Peckham, Olbrich’s Herbal Horticulturist, is planning to add a section close to the Herb Garden devoted to Native American Herbs.
To help implement this endeavor and learn more about Native American herbs, Samantha is planning to have a study group on the subject sometime this summer. She will let us know of the date, time, etc.

Gardens of Southern Ireland
Following our MHS business meeting at 9 a.m., Jane Gahlman, one of our members and who works at Scheonheit Gardens, will delight us with a colorful slide/talk about her recent trip to public and private gardens of Southern Ireland. Come and experience the beauty of Ireland, and see their most popular garden herbs and flowers.
This is a change from our original topic which was to be a Leaf Casting Workshop. The casting event will be rescheduled as a Mini Class on another day, at the Schonheit Garden Center. More information about that as it develops. |

Mini Classes: The first mini class is Beginning to Cook with Herbs (a repeat of last years class) at Marge Snyder's house. The cost is $15 and the class is offered on two different days, Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 6-9:30 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 22 from
6-9:30 p.m. Please email or call Marge Snyder to register for the class. Each learner will do some cooking, meet people with similar interests, and new some new cooking tricks. Open to beginners and more experienced cooks. |

Bonnie Kulke designed some lovely mini Bay wreaths and holiday ornaments for us to make and sell at the Herb Fair. We will make them at Olbrich's Meeting Room. All the supplies will be provided. Starting Herbs – Beginning and Advanced with Nino Ridgeway
of Barthel Fruit Farm
So you Want to Grow Herbs! – Are you frustrated with your early attempts to grow herbs? Learn some simple secrets that will bring you quick success and apply basic principles to keep your herb plants healthy and productive. For those with some experience, learn why your cilantro and lavender die, why your basil languishes, and how to winter over your rosemary indoors. Nino Ridgway is owner of Herbs & Everlastings, a Mequon nursery that has been growing and selling herbs, perennials, and vegetable seedlings for 15 years. She is an active member of the Herb Society of America – Wisconsin Unit and has a Ph.D. in Entomology from UW Madison. She is second in command at Barthel Fruit Farm where H&E is located. |

From the Garden to the Store: The Commercialization of Herbal Medicine
Jeanette Roberts, Dean and Professor, of the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy, will discuss the commercialization of herbal medications, including regulation and marketing. She will focus on one or two classic herbal meds that are top sellers, with some clinical data, warnings, and things to consider. There will be a brief business meeting from 6:00 to 6:30 PM, before the program. |

Dill Study Group
Open to paid MHS Members. Do you know the difference between a Pot Herb and a Cauldron Herb? Come to our Dill Study Groups and find out the answer.
Two dates have been selected for the Dill Study Group at Olbrich. Bonnie Kulke will lead. They are March 16th and March 29th from 6-7:45 p.m. in the Upstairs Meeting Room. Download the study form here. This is open to any paid member in the Madison Herb Society – beginners and experienced gardeners alike. If you signed up at the January meeting, let us know if you are still able to attend. Call Marge Snyder to sign-up. And in case of inclement weather also call Marge at 233-6219.
The way Bonnie plans to conduct the Study Group is as follows: On March 16th we'll talk about the Umbelliferrae family, the origin and history of dill and lore. Bring a list of book sources or web sites you have researched. The March 25 meeting will focus on growing and harvesting, medicinal uses, culinary uses and miscellaneous. You don't have to attend both. Feel free to bring a treat made with Dill to either meeting. |

Garden Road Trip
Saturday, June 26, 2010, will be our summer road trip to herb and garden locations to our south. This year we are doing a day trip rather than an overnight bus tour, so we will be car-pooling. Let us know if you're interested in going on the tour, and if you would be willing to be one of the drivers. The drivers will be compensated. We will meet at the Park 'n Ride at Hwy. 51 and Hwy. 12 &18 (Beltline), at 8:00 a.m.
The details are still being finalized but here is a list of the places we'll visit.
Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Gardens, Rockford, Illinois. The Arboretum includes several gardens, including an herb garden. The entrance fee is $6 ($3 for over 65).
Wind Ridge Herb Farm, Caledonia, IL, east of Rockford. They have over 400 varieties of herbs, and as a bonus, we'll be there on the day of their herb fair. The Herb Faire is $2 and will happen rain or shine. Sandwiches and wraps will be available at the faire.
Gardens of Woodstock, Woodstock, IL. The Garden Center also has a home decor and gift shop, and several display gardens for viewing.
Finally, if there is time, we'll stop on our return route, at the
Rock Valley Garden Center, in Rockford,
We'll head back to Madison, and plan to return to the Park 'n Ride, by about 8 p.m. or earlier. All of the stops have Websites, so take a look at all they have to offer. It looks like it will be lots of fun. Contacts: Marge Snyder or Rosemary Stenback. |

Member's Garden Tour
A chance to see how MHS members incorporate herbs into their own gardens. The July 24 member's tour will be start in Madison and then head south of the city. From university, to home garden, to businesses, we'll see a wide variety of member's locations and their use of herbs. If you're interested, we can arrange car pools to help save the environment and have an enjoyable ride with fellow herbalists. Contacts: Marge Snyder or Rosemary Stenback to register or volunteer to drive. We'll start at 9:00 am and travel to the following locations.
1. Allen Centennial Gardens on the UW campus, to see the herb garden that MHS members have planned and planted.
2. Monticello to the home of Pauline Wyss
3. Monroe, to Nancy's Meadow Herbs, with member and owner Nancy Momsen.
4. Attica, to the business of Cathy Burgweger, where we'll have lunch together. |
