Role of Herbs in Fresh, Healthy Mexican Cuisine Kait Mayer - Chef at Sur La Table

Explore how herbs, including cilantro, can be used in creating fresh, healthy Mexican dishes. Kaitlin Mayer will demonstrate several delicious recipes while discussing what makes them healthy as well as where to source ingredients and equipment.

Kaitlin Mayer, a Chef Instructor at Sur La Table and a freelance chef in Madison, WI, has been cooking ever since her parents allowed her, at the ripe age of five, to cook them breakfast in bed! Kaitlin received a Bachelor's degree in Culinary Nutrition from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, and also attended Deutsche Wein und Sommelierschule in Koblenz, Germany, to study wine. She is also a member of the American Dietetics Association.

A Packaging Party for the Herb Faire

Come join the fun of packaging MHS’s favorite
signature product for the November fair - Wisconsin Herb Blend. The work goes quickly with lots of help, and after the packaging, enjoy some herbal treats and conversation. Members are asked to bring herbal treats to share.

There will be lots of vendors, the MHS booth and the Educational Room with hands-on ideas that focus on herbal gardening, decorating, cooking, products, and/or crafts.

MHS Holiday Potluck for MHS Members and their Guests at Olbrich Gardens

Theme: Santa Claus is Coming to Town

What to bring:

  • An herbal potluck dish to share, with serving utensil
  • Your own plate(s), cup(s), and dining utensils
  • A donation of full size personal care items for a women’s shelter
  • Optional: A friend/partner (but then bring more food & utensils, etc.)
  • Optional: 3 dozen cookies (all one kind) for a cookie exchange
  • Holiday cheer!

Linda Conroy of Moonwise Herbs presents "Herbal First Aid"

Linda Conroy is a bioregional herbalist with more than 20 years of experience. She dedicates her life to connecting with the green world. She is the founder of Wild Eats Community Meals, the Midwest Women’s Herbal Conference, and Moonwise Herbs. Participants in programs facilitated by Conroy walk away with an appreciation for the natural world, as well as skills for incorporating plants into their daily life.

Herb Society Tea and a Look at Historical Hats


Join us for tea and a special presentation about historical hats! Be sure to wear your favorite tea hat! The Wisconsin Historical Society Curator of Social History, Leslie Bellais, will be bring historical hats and tell us about where they are from, how they were worn, and maybe even who wore them.

Kate Heiber-Cobb, Madison Area Permaculture Guild, Deforest, Wisconsin, presents “Basics of Permaculture Systems and How That Relates to Plants with a Focus on Herbs.”

Kate Heiber-Cobb, founded the Madison Area Permaculture Guild in the Spring of 2008 and continues to coordinate the grassroots organization. Through her business, Sustainability on Stilts, LLC, she designs, educates and consults on Permaculture. Kate teaches Permaculture Design Certificate Courses through Madison Area Permaculture Guild, and also at the Continuing Education Department of Madison College, and other venues.

This meeting features Kaitlin Gibbs and a topic just in time for the new warmer season: Herbs and Tips for Great Summer Grilling. Kaitlin is the Resident Chef at Sur La Table in Hilldale Mall and a freelance chef in the city of Madison. She attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI, where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Culinary Nutrition. Kaitlin also studied wine at the Deutsche Wein-und Sommerlierschule in Koblenz, Germany and is a member of the American Dietetics Association. This exciting program will feature a lecture and demonstration on pairing herbs with grilled meats, seafood, veggies, and fruit; several tips for successful grilling; and recipes to take home. Be sure to come to get your summer off to a delicious start!!! The meeting will take place in the Atrium (rather than upstairs meeting room) at Olbrich Gardens.

Summer Harvest Potluck

Please join us for a chance to socialize with MHS friends at a middle-of-the-summer Harvest Potluck at Olbrich Gardens on August 21, from 5 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

Members are encouraged to bring a variety of foods using your garden harvest and herbal delights. Also, please bring a table setting for you and each of your guests. Beverages will be provided.

This is a chance to meet and greet new members and members with whom you have not visited all summer. Won’t that be fun?! This year's MHS Harvest Potluck is being chaired by Wendy Way and Joan Flynn. See your email for additional details.
